Student Devotional – Mckenna Behar
“But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.“”
In this chapter of the Bible, there is a dispute between the people of Judea and Paul and Barnabas. The men from Judea believed that in order to become Christians, gentiles had to be circumcised and follow the other laws of the Jews. For some Jews, it was difficult to accept that the Gentiles were of equal standing in the church without having to keep the laws of Moses. Paul and Barnabas disagreed that Gentiles should have to submit to Jewish traditions to become followers of Jesus. Peter says in verses 8 and 9, “And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us, and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith.” What Peter is saying is that while following God’s law is an important part of being a Christian, our salvation does not hinge on our ability to keep God’s law perfectly. We all fall short of God but the good news is we are saved by the Holy Spirit and offered free salvation because of Jesus’s sacrifice.
