For the second summer, SM2 has been privileged to partner with an organization called Kids of Growth located in the Westside of downtown Chattanooga. Kids of Growth is a summer camp that meets once a week for children ages 5-10. On any given week you could expect to find us singing, dancing, acting, painting, gardening, playing sports & learning about Jesus with the children.
It was a unique opportunity for us to experience ministering & serving a community that’s so close to our own home but still one that we weren’t familiar with. We often see “missions” as traveling the world. However, we have had the opportunity for mission in our own city.
It has also helped us to understand poverty of Spirit in the Westside and in ourselves. We often go to “serve”, to give of ourselves, thinking we have something big we can do for God. But it is in serving the least of these that we recognize the unfaithfulness, pride, jealousy, bitterness, and hardness of our own heart. It is in serving, that the Lord ministers to us – He softens us, humbles us, and grows us. As we try and minister to others, we end up growing closer to God and understanding Him more.
Each Thursday before we left for Kids of Growth several of our students shared a devotional or testimony with the group pertaining to Kids of Growth, what it’s meant to them and what God’s been doing in their heart through it. You will find those listed below. I encourage you to take time to read their thoughts and what they shared with us:
I’d also like to give a BIG shout-out and thank you to our adult leaders who joined forces with us and lead so well! Thank you for giving of your time and making it possible for us to travel down to the Westside each week!
